The Handle District may be small (just one square block), but it is mighty.  This year we published a really cool booklet to showcase all that is “The Handle.”

WELCOME TO THE

Handle District

The official site of the Handle Business Improvement District (HBID). The HBID includes all restaurants, bars, and breweries, within the boundaries of 18th Street, 19th Street, L Street, and Capitol Avenue in Midtown Sacramento, California. HBID is a benefit assessment district approved by businesses and adopted by the Sacramento City Council to help fund marketing, improvements and sales promotion efforts for Handle District businesses.

ON THE BLOCK

Dine & Drink

With 18 places to eat in just one large city block — the Handle District is home to many of the top restaurants in the region. The district also has one of the country’s most popular chocolate boutiques, an award winning coffee house, artfully curated wine collections and multiple breweries.

District Events

District Programs

Streetscape

The Board of Directors has programmed for many of the improvements to the streetscape (sidewalks, alleys and streets).  This has included the installation of 20 new street lights in the district, pedestrian safety improvements, new trash and recycling cans, 75 new bike parking spots, district signs and more.  Because of the high cost of improvements, it can often take multiple years to accumulate the funds needed to complete a project.

Maintenance

The Handle District manages a year round maintenance program to address litter, graffiti, event cleanup, trash can pickup and other related services in the one block area.  The maintenance team also actively monitors dumpster issues, installs the street banners and waters the plant baskets.

Valet

The Handle District’s original valet kiosk is located on Capitol Avenue at 18th Street. The Handle Valet stand in front of Zocalo is for all restaurants in the district and is available during lunch and dinner hours every week from Tuesday through Sunday.  A second kiosk is located on L Street in front of the L Street Lofts.  It is open to all Handle patrons available on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Safety

Monitoring

In coordination with the Sacramento Police Department, the Handle addresses such challenges as noise abatement, panhandling, traffic control, and trespassing. The Handle relies on the incredible support of the Midtown Association’s Clean and Safe team.
